Every paving job we do starts with excavation, so we know exactly what good site work looks like. Zilembo's handles excavating for driveways, parking areas, house lots and small commercial sites across Southern Maine — digging out, grading and building a compacted gravel base with proper drainage, so whatever goes on top stays put through Maine's frost, mud season and heavy rain.

Excavating FAQs
Do you do excavating without paving?
Yes. We take on excavation and site work as standalone jobs — site prep, grading, drainage, gravel driveways and more. Many customers have us prep the site now and pave later.
Why does excavation matter for a new driveway?
Most driveway failures in Maine start below the surface. Soft soil, poor drainage and a thin base lead to frost heaves, cracking and sinking. Proper excavation and a compacted gravel base are what make pavement last.
Can you fix drainage and standing water problems?
Often, yes. Regrading, ditching, culverts and drainage lines can move water away from your driveway, lot or foundation. We will look at the site and recommend the right fix.
Do I need a permit for excavation work?
It depends on your town and the scope of the job. Some work — especially near wetlands, shorelines or roads — needs local or state approval. We can walk you through what applies before the job starts.
What areas do you excavate in?
We provide excavating throughout York County and Cumberland County, including Portland, Scarborough, Saco, Biddeford, Kennebunk, Wells, York, Sanford, Gorham, Windham and nearby towns.
